Pest control licensing in Western Australia

In short: In Western Australia, pest management businesses must be registered with the Department of Health, and treatments must be carried out by a licensed pest management technician under the Health (Pesticides) Regulations 2011. The technician's licence card lists endorsements, such as Commercial Domestic Pests or Termites and Timber pests, that show what they can treat.

Business registration and technician licences

The WA Department of Health regulates pest management under the Health (Pesticides) Regulations 2011. HealthyWA says pest management businesses in WA must be registered with the Department of Health, and treatments must be carried out by a licensed pest management technician. A provisional licence lets a trainee work under supervision. A full Pest Management Technician licence lets the holder carry out the treatments listed on their licence.

Endorsements: what the technician can treat

Each licence lists endorsements. HealthyWA lists the common ones as:

  • Commercial Domestic Pests: rodents, ants, spiders, cockroaches, flying insects, fleas and bedbugs.
  • Termites and Timber pests: termites and other timber pests.

Conditions or restrictions are printed on the back of the licence card.

How to check before you book

  1. Ask for the business's Department of Health registration number. HealthyWA says the business name and registration number should be shown on the vehicle.
  2. Check the technician's licence card shows the right endorsement for your job.
  3. Ask about public liability and professional indemnity insurance, and get a written quote.
  4. If you're unsure whether a business is registered, contact the Department of Health on (08) 9222 2000 or ehinfo@health.wa.gov.au. For problems with payment or unfinished work, HealthyWA points to Consumer Protection on 1300 30 40 54.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What licence (and endorsement or authorisation) do you hold for this job, and can I see it?
  • Are you insured for public liability and professional indemnity?
  • Can I have a written quote that includes your licence details and ABN?
  • Which chemicals will you use, why, and how will they be applied?
  • Do we need to leave, close windows or move pets, and when can we go back in?
  • Will I get a written report or treatment record afterwards?

How this referral service fits in

Geraldton Pest Quotes is a referral service run by Raf Web Studio. We don't hold a pest management licence because we don't carry out pest control. We only pass your request to an operator who holds the licence your job needs, and that operator is responsible for the work. Please still check their licence yourself.
